Melissa McCarthy nudged ahead of Batman and Superman by the smallest of margins at the nation’s box offices this weekend.
McCarthy, appearing in “The Boss,” was projected to bring in $23.5 million in box office sales in the United States and Canada this weekend, according to Universal Pictures.
That was just a nose ahead of “Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” which was projected to deal $23.4 million in sales. Remove the rounding-off math, and the two films are just $46,000 apart.
The superhero flick from Warner Bros. has grossed $296.7 million in domestic sales over three weeks of exhibition, just ahead of the other big springtime release: “Zootopia.” That Disney cartoon feature was in third place this weekend, at $14.4 million, and has $296 million in the bank in the U.S.-Canadian market from its six weeks worth of showing.
Rounding out the five most-popular movies this week, as estimated by the studios, were “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” ($6.4 million) and “Hardcore Harry” (debuting with $5 million).
