Metro’s D Line Extension Nears Milestone as First Phase Prepares to Open by End of 2025

Full D Line Closure Continues Until July 25 for System Integration

Construction on the first segment of Metro’s long-awaited D Line Extension is entering its final stages, with officials projecting a grand opening by the end of 2025. The Westside expansion, which began construction in 2014, will eventually connect Downtown Los Angeles to key destinations along Wilshire Boulevard, fundamentally reshaping how Angelenos commute across the city.

Phase 1 includes three new stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega. Two additional phases will follow: Phase 2 to Century City, expected in late 2026, and Phase 3 to Westwood/VA Hospital, set to open in the second half of 2027.

Metro officials announced that core construction milestones for Section 1 have already been reached. Tunneling has been completed, tracks are in place, lighting systems have been installed, and public artworks are now being added. Installation of the third rail, which will provide electric power to subway trains, is also complete.

As part of final preparations, Metro will begin integrating power, communication, and safety systems between the existing D Line and the new extension. These systems monitor vital infrastructure such as air quality, ventilation, and emergency response mechanisms, making the connection a complex and highly technical task.

To safely carry out this work, Metro will implement a temporary full closure of the D Line from now until the end of service on July 25. The closure will allow engineers and technicians to complete integration and ensure full system functionality ahead of testing and eventual service rollout.

Metro is expected to share further updates on alternate transportation options and service advisories during the closure window.
