Metro’s Purple Line Extension: Metro Works On Revolutionizing LA’s Westside Commute

A Detailed Look at the Project’s Phases and Progress and End Dates

By Dolores Quintana

Metro Los Angeles has embarked on a transformative journey to enhance accessibility throughout the city by expanding the rail system to the Westside, courtesy of the Purple (D Line) Extension Transit Project. This highly anticipated addition to Metro’s transportation network hopes to improve access to public transportation in West Los Angeles, featuring seven new stations and a dependable, high-speed connection between downtown and the bustling Westside. The aim is to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by getting commuters to travel via public transit instead of by car.

The Westside, known for its status as one of Los Angeles’s busiest regions and the second-largest job center in the area, will witness a substantial transformation with the introduction of the Metro Purple (D Line) Extension Transit Project. As this project unfolds, it hopes to bridge vital areas and elevate the overall travel experience for the diverse community that calls LA County home.

Project Status:

Work on this project started in 2019; the Metro Purple (D Line) Extension Transit Project is executed in three distinct sections:

  • Section 1: Encompassing the Wilshire/La Brea Station, Wilshire/Fairfax Station, and Wilshire/La Cienega Station, this segment is scheduled to open its doors in 2024.
  • Section 2: Featuring the Wilshire/Rodeo Station and Century City/Constellation Station, this phase is on track to commence services in 2025.
  • Section 3: The final leg, which includes the Westwood/UCLA Station and Westwood/VA Hospital Station, is set to become operational in 2027.
