More Than 1,000 Shelter Pets Hoping For Homes This Weekend

NKLA adoption weekends, held twice annually, are free, family friendly, and feature adoptable pets from more than 50 local shelters and rescues.
NKLA adoption weekends, held twice annually, are free, family friendly, and feature adoptable pets from more than 50 local shelters and rescues.

Shelter pets will shine at the NKLA Adoption Weekend Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, from 10 am to 6 pm, at the Page Museum of La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.

Hosted by Best Friends Animal Society, in collaboration with PetSmart Charities, the popular event is one of several Best Friends super adoptions held twice a year throughout the country.

Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization focused on ending the killing of shelter pets and in Los Angeles, Best Friends is leading the NKLA (No-Kill Los Angeles) initiative with a mission to transform L.A. into the nation’s largest No-Kill City.

More than 1,000 pets will be available at NKLA Adoption Weekend, with adoption fees starting at just $50. All pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped and adopters will receive a goody bag filled with toys, treats, coupons, and more.

“Any Angeleno who is looking to adopt should check out the NKLA Adoption Weekend. From playful pups and cute kittens to super sweet seniors, it’s the perfect venue to find your new best friend,” said Marc Peralta, executive director of Best Friends Animal Society – Los Angeles. “You can even bring your dog along to meet potential canine siblings at the event.”

The NKLA adoption weekends, held twice annually, are free, family-friendly and feature adoptable pets from more than 50 local shelters and rescues.

At this event, dogs and cats will be available from Los Angeles Animal Services and Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in Mission Hills, Border Collies in Need, Boston Buddies, PugNation Rescue LA, Wags and Walks, Labs and Friends.org, Angel City Pit Bulls, Kitt Crusaders and The Cat Cove.

Several animal-loving celebrity supporters of Best Friends Animal Society’s lifesaving work will entertain at the free, family-friendly event, while guests can enjoy tasty cuisine from LA’s hottest food trucks.

Peralta is hoping for a record turnout and number of adoptions at NKLA Adoption Weekend. “The sad truth is that 9,000 dogs and cats are killed in U.S. shelters every day. Best Friends Animal Society believes that number should be zero and adoption is a key component to making that happen,” he said. “It’s only by working together that we will Save Them All and turn LA into NKLA.”

Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization focused exclusively on ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. A leader in the no-kill movement, Best Friends runs the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals, as well as lifesaving programs in collaboration with its nationwide network of members and partners working to Save Them All.

In Los Angeles, Best Friends leads the NKLA initiative, which is focused on ending the killing of dogs and cats in city shelters by 2017, and operates two centers, the NKLA Pet Adoption Center in West L.A. and the Best Friends Pet Adoption and Spay/Neuter Center in Mission Hills.

Since its founding in 1984, Best Friends has helped reduce the number of animals killed in American shelters from 17 million per year to about 4 million.

The adoption weekend at the La Brea Tar Pits is located at 5801 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles. For more information, visit www.nkla.org/events.
