An off-duty sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed in her La Canada Flintridge home by her husband, a Los Angeles County firefighter who fled to a facility in Pacoima where he shot himself to death while sitting in a government vehicle, a sheriff’s deputy said today.
The discovery of the woman’s body was reported at 9:50 p.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of Crown Avenue, said Deputy Mike Barraza of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
“Deputies responded to a ‘woman screaming’ call. Deputies made entry into the residence and found a 32-year-old female victim of a gunshot wound.”
The door was open when the deputies arrived, officials said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Barraza said. She was an off-duty sheriff’s deputy with two years in the department.
The couple’s 6-year-old son was believed to have been inside the home at the time of the altercation and shooting, but the father later dropped the child off at a relative’s home, sheriff’s Lt. Dave Coleman said during a live news conference. Sheriff’s homicide detectives were notified by Los Angeles police, who had responded to a dead body at a Los Angeles County Fire Facility in Pacoima, he said.
The body was determined to be that of the La Canada woman’s husband, a five-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, who was believed to have shot her in the residence and then fled to Pacoima where he shot himself, Barraza said.
A weapon was recovered, he said.
All names are being withheld, pending notification of relatives.
