A Japanese bakery and cafe franchise has opened its first Los Angeles location in Sawtelle, specializing in boba egg tarts and garlic buns.
As reported by Toddrickallen, Sunmerry Bakery Cafe has opened at the former Eleven Arts gallery space at 2129 Sawtelle Boulevard. According to the bakery’s website, the Sawtelle shop’s soft opening was July 10. Its hours are Wednesday to Sunday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunmerry started in Japan and was brought to Taiwan in 1986.
“With the Japanese baking techniques, and the local Taiwan flavors, Sunmerry Bakery has become a household name in Taipei. Being a family company, the growth we make are measures by our products and our customers and not the number of stores or sales. We take pride in our baking expertise and our ability to come up with new products that match the local flavors, and these are what we hope to bring to the US market,” reads the bakery’s website.
Among the bakery’s signature items include boba egg tarts, super garlic buns, taro mochi and a variety of bolas.
The Sawtelle location is the bakery’s first shop within the City of Los Angeles. Other U.S. storefronts are in Irvine, Monterey Park, Temple City, City of Industry, Gardena, Rowland Heights, Arcadia, Brea, New Jersey and New York.
