A man wanted for sexually assaulting a woman on a Metro Purple Line train – and whose security photo was circulated by authorities – was in custody on May 29 after turning himself in to police, the Sheriff’s dept. reported.
The assault happened about 10:45 p.m. May 17 on a Union Station-bound train between the Wilshire/Western and Wilshire/Normandie stops, according to Sgt. Al Garcia of the Special Victims Bureau.
About 10 p.m. Wednesday, 23-year-old Danon Drake “walked into the Inglewood Department (station) and said he was informed that the police were looking for him and his picture had been broadcast on the news,” the Sheriff’s dept. said in a statement this morning.
Drake was booked on suspicion of sexual assault and was held on $1 million bail, the sheriff’s department reported. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday in downtown Los Angeles.
The woman had boarded the train at the Wilshire/Western station and was alone in the railcar with her attacker, who pushed her down and sexually assaulted her, Garcia said. She kicked the man, broke free and managed to get off the train at the Wilshire/Normandie station, where she reported the assault, he said.
“The suspect was identified after his picture was broadcast over news broadcasts,” the Sheriff’s dept. reported.
