While the 33rd Congressional race is getting all the attention on the Westside, there is actually another election for a House of Representatives seat in the West Los Angeles region. Incumbent Rep. Karen Bass, D-Century City, had two challengers in the June 3 primary election for the 37th Congressional District: Republican R. Adam King and Democrat Mervin Evans.
With more than 72 percent of precincts reporting at 1:25 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Bass and King were the Top Two vote getters. Accordingly, both candidates advance to the Nov. 4 general election.
Evans will not advance.
Bass earned an overwhelming majority of the votes June 3. According to County officials, 29,636 people voted for Bass. That total accounted for 80.10 percent of the vote.
King received 5,074 votes (13.71 percent) to finish second.
In third, Evans earned 2,287 votes (6.18 percent).
Bass was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2010. Prior to that, she was just the second woman and third African American overall to serve as speaker of the State Assembly.
The 37th Congressional District includes West Los Angeles, Palms, Century City, Mar Vista, Sawtelle, Beverlywood, Cheviot Hills, Pico-Robertson, and Culver City, among other areas.
