Rain falls in parts of L.A., more later today

More than an inch of rain fell in the mountains above Pasadena today, and the  National Weather Service gave a 70 percent chance of rain today, including a chance for rain at today’s Dodgers-Padres game at Dodger Stadium.

The rain “probably won’t be heavy enough to cause a cancellation, but fans should be prepared for wet weather,” Andrew Rorke, a senior NWS forecaster, told City News Service.

The biggest problem for fans will be driving to and from the game, Rorke said.

“We all know how drivers are during the first rain of the season,” Rorke said.

Light showers had hit many Southland neighborhoods before dawn. But accumulations in the San Gabriel Mountains were significant.

The Clear Creek Ranger Station, on Angeles Crest Highway north of Mount Wilson, got 1.26 inches of rain overnight, a Los Angeles County rain gauge reported. Nearby Cogswell Dam got .98 inches as of 9 a.m.

Rain also soaked the foothills: .36 inches was recorded overnight at Descanso Gardens, .35 at La Canada-Flintridge, .28 at Brand Park in Glendale and .24 at Eagle Rock.

The county gauge near Union Station Los Angeles got .10 inch.

Rainfall measurements are expected to range from a half-inch in many areas, to up to two inches on the south slopes of the big mountains.

The forecast also gave “a slight chance of thunderstorms” in the afternoon and evening, mainly over mountain and desert areas.

Winds will also gust at speeds of 20 to 25 mph, with stronger winds expected over the mountains and the high desert. A wind advisory may be in effect today, the discussion said.     Showers were expected to decrease by Monday, but cool air from the winter-style low pressure system was expected to remain in the area through Tuesday. Then, high temperatures should begin to climb into the 80s.
