Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has announced that Daystar Peterson, widely known as rap artist Tory Lanez, has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Herriford. The verdict comes after Peterson’s conviction by a jury for the attack and shooting of fellow musical artist Megan Pete, also known as Megan Thee Stallion, in the Hollywood Hills in 2020.
Over the course of three years, Peterson’s actions were deemed by the court to be part of a pattern aimed at intimidating and silencing Megan Pete. District Attorney Gascón highlighted the broader societal issue of women, especially Black women, being hesitant to report crimes like assault, as many are not believed when they do. He praised Megan Pete’s courage in enduring an extensive investigation, court proceedings, and public scrutiny as she faced her traumatic experience head-on.
Deputy District Attorneys Kathy Ta and Alex Bott and Victim Services Representative Cecilia Zamora were acknowledged for their tireless efforts to ensure justice was served. The Los Angeles Police Department was also commended for its thorough investigative work.
Last year, after seven hours of deliberation, jurors found Peterson guilty of one count of assault with an automatic firearm. Additionally, the jury confirmed allegations of causing great bodily injury and firearm use. Peterson was also convicted on counts of carrying an unregistered loaded firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The shooting took place on July 12, 2020. Peterson and the victim were riding in an SUV in the Hollywood Hills after leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s house when the victim disembarked from the vehicle. Peterson proceeded to fire five shots at the victim, resulting in her sustaining wounds to her foot.
