Signage Violations — Update

Q: What is the Public Right
of Way?
A: The Public Right of Way consists of the roadway, sidewalk and parkway (any portions the general public uses for access to and from private property.)
Q: What are the limitations for use of the Public Right of Way?
A: ORDINANCE No.128,577, Eff. 11/14/64 “No person… shall construct, deposit or maintain any structure… or any obstacle of any nature whatsoever in or upon any street, sidewalk, or parkway which will interfere with the free passage of pedestrians or vehicles along such street, sidewalk or parkway.â€
(This includes freestanding signs which advertise businesses, events, announcements, etc. and real estate signs.)

Q: Are the San Vicente Blvd. median and business area sidewalks subject to the above
ordinance?
A: YES
Q: Is the sidewalk on the actual median subject to the above
ordinance?
A: YES
Q: May a sign be removed by an unauthorized person if it is in
the Public Right of Way?
A: NO
Q: Who removes illegal
signage?
A: The Department of Street Services
Q: How do I report an
illegal sign?
A: Call 311 and state the exact location of the sign. You will be given a Reference Number. To check on the status of the complaint, go to http://zimas.lacity.org/ and enter your Reference Number.
Q: Is this service presently
active?
A: YES. The LA Dept. of Street Services Investigator is aware of San Vicente Blvd. Public Right of Way violations and has been citing violators.
Q: What can be done by our community to eliminate signage in the Public Right of Way?
A: Businesses put out signs to attract customers. If we support our local businesses, the need to post illegal signs will not be necessary.
