Stan’s Donuts in Westwood Honored by Councilman Paul Koretz

A Westwood Village donut shop will turn back the clock on May 3 in celebration of its five decades selling pastries to both Hollywood stars and everyday doughnut lovers alike.

Councilman Paul Koretz will be at the shop to declare May 3, 2014, “Stan’s Donuts Day” in honor of the bakery opened by Stan Berman at the corner of Weyburn and Broxton avenues in December 1963.

For a few hours starting at 9:30 a.m., the doughnuts will cost a dime, which is what they went for when Berman first bought the storefront, then named The Corner Shoppe, from a friend.

The store will also unveil a plaque designating Stan’s Donuts a “Monumental Business,” a distinction the city has also given to Musso & Frank Grill in Hollywood and Tam O’Shanter Inn.

Berman, who comes from a long line of Russian Jewish bread bakers, offers a selection of basic and gourmet doughnuts that includes a few items inspired by his Jewish roots.

Berman’s signature peanut butter doughnuts have been featured on KCET reporter Huell Howser’s “California’s Gold” show.

Due to the shop’s proximity to two theaters, movie stars including Elizabeth Taylor, Steve McQueen, Gene Wilder and Tom Cruise have been known to be tempted away from many a red-carpet movie premiere to partake in the fried doughy pastries.
