Street parking near the Hollywood Sign could be further restricted

Hollywood signStreet parking in several neighborhoods near the Hollywood Sign could be further restricted under a proposal that will be considered by the City Council today.

The Hollywoodland Homeowners Association wants the city to expand weekend restrictions in five existing preferential parking districts in the Beachwood Canyon area to seven days a week.

Only residents who pay an annual fee to the city Transportation Department for a placard are permitted to park on the street during select hours in preferential parking districts.

The five districts being proposed for expanded hours include Rodgerton Drive, Ledgewood Drive, Woodhaven Drive, Lechner Place, Hollyridge Drive, Rockcliff Drive, Deronda Drive and Mulholland Highway.

According to a motion by Councilman Tom LaBonge, increasing those hours is necessary because tourists continue to park on neighborhood streets while visiting the Hollywood Sign.

“As the popularity of the Hollywood Sign and the Griffith Park continued to increase with the public and tourists, street parking has impacted the immediate area,” according to LaBonge’s motion.

Residents of the area asked LaBonge during a committee meeting last month to push through the amendments during his final weeks in office. LaBonge will be termed-out in July.

The City Council will vote today on whether to ask the Transportation Department to report back on recommendations for increasing the preferential parking districts’ hours. The city would need to conduct public outreach on the increased hours, which would need the approval of at least 67 percent approval by residents in each of the parking districts.
