Strong Winds to Continue Through the Monday

Strong winds blew across the Antelope Valley and the San Gabriel Mountains Monday while rough seas threaten small craft, forecasters said.

A wind advisory indicating wind speeds of at least 35 miles per hour will be in effect until 9 tonight in the Antelope Valley and the San Gabriel Mountains in L.A. and Ventura counties. In both areas, winds are expected to blow at between 20 and 35 miles per hour and gust at up to 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

“Wind gusts could be strong enough to down branches and cause isolated property damage,” warned an NWS statement. “Winds can make driving difficult, especially for drivers of high-profile vehicles and vehicles towing trailers.

The NWS said around 7 a.m. Monday that in the previous 12 hours it recorded winds of 64 mph at Whitaker Peak and 54 mph at Sandberg, both in the San Gabriel Mountains, 49 mph in Chatsworth, 46 mph in Lancaster, 39 mph in the Santa Clarita Valley, 33 mph in the Santa Monica Mountains and 31 mph in the San Fernando Valley.

Off shore, combined seas of between 12 and 15 feet are expected, along with northwest winds of between 15 and 30 knots per hour, gusting to 35 knots per hour. A small craft advisory meant as a warning to smaller vessels, especially if in the hands of an inexperienced sailor, will be in effect until 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The NWS forecast partly cloudy skies Monday and highs of 51 on Mount Nelson; 53 in Palmdale and Lancaster; 60 in Saugus; 62 in Avalon and Burbank; 63 at LAX and in San Gabriel; 65 in Long Beach. Pasadena and downtown L.A.; and 66 in Woodland Hills.

Partly cloudy skies were also forecast in Orange County , along with highs of 60 in Laguna Beach. Mission Viejo  and San Clemente; 61 in Newport Beach and Yorba Linda; and 63 in Anaheim, Irvine and Fullerton.

Tuesday’s temperatures under sunny skies will be around 6 degrees higher in parts of Los Angeles County and up to 9 degrees higher in Orange County.
