Photographed over a three-year period, Roberts’ vibrant images capture everyday life observed during extensive travels throughout remote areas of India.
The photographs elegantly illustrate Roberts’ mission to explore the spiritual wealth of people whose most valuable assets are their deep connection to faith, family, and long-held cultural mores. The essence of Roberts’ work emanates from the relationships he forms with his subjects, revealing intimate moments including early-morning prayers and ordinary domestic chores.
Fredric Roberts received the Best Foreign Photographer for India, presented by the Indian government in April, 2011 and the International Photography Award in 2003 and 2004. His first book, Humanitas: Volume One, was a finalist for ForeWord Magazine’s 2005 Mention in the 2007 Lucie Awards and was featured in The New York Times’ 100 Notable Books.
Roberts’ work is in the collections of Stanford University and the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego. He has exhibited at the Museum of History and Art in Ontario, California; the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego; and the Rubin Museum of Art, New York City; as well as at Lehigh, Yale, and Stony Brook universities.
Fredric Roberts is a graduate of Yale University. In 2000, he retired from a 30-year career in finance and since then has immersed himself in the practice of photography, traveling throughout Asia documenting the cultures of many spiritual communities.
