One-time State Sen. Sheila Kuehl and former Santa Monica mayor Bobby Shriver will face each other on Nov. 4 in an election to succeed Zev Yaroslavsky in the Third District of the County Board of Supervisors, as both candidates received the top two votes in the June 3 primary.

Neither candidate was threatened by the other six people challenging for the supervisorial seat, which opened up for the first time since 1994.

Since no one emerges from the eight-candidate race with a simple majority (50 percent plus one), there will be a runoff between Kuehl and Shriver.

Kuehl finished with 43,348 votes (36.18 percent) according to the final results reported by the County Registrar. Behind her in second place was Shriver with 34,509 votes (28.80 percent).

In third place is John Duran with 19,577 votes (16.34 percent). Pamela Conley Ulich notched 7,821 votes (6.53 percent).

No other candidate crossed the five percent threshold.

The third supervisorial district mostly covers the Westside and portions of the San Fernando Valley.

Yaroslavsky was termed out of office after serving as Supervisor since 1994.

Also termed out of office this year was Gloria Molina, who represented the first district. Former Labor Secretary Hilda Solis garnered more than 70 percent of the vote according to the latest reported results. With Solis holding on to her wide margin over A.A. Saucedo Hood and Juventino Gomez, she won Molina’s seat outright and a Nov. 4 runoff will not be necessary.

Other candidates in the third district race include Doug Fay (4,205 votes), Rudy Melendez (4,569), Yuval Kremer (3,897), and Eric Preven (1,898).

Kuehl was a former child actress, while Shriver is the oldest nephew of John F. Kennedy and brother to Maria Shriver.
