UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said today that while multiple athletic facilities suffered damage during the water main break and flooding on the Westwood campus, repairs were proceeding quickly and upcoming sports activities would likely not be impacted.

In a letter sent to UCLA sports fans, Guerrero noted that despite dramatic pictures of the Pauley Pavilion playing surface under water, the famed court would be repaired and ready for the start of basketball season.

“While assessments are ongoing in regard to the damage and how to proceed, the building itself has not been structurally compromised,” Guerrero wrote. “The largest issue we currently face within Pauley is in regard to the playing surface.

“We have numerous options, and based on the information our experts and consultants have provided thus far, I am confident that the facility will be ready for our men’s and women’s basketball teams this upcoming season.”

Guerrero noted that the north side of Pauley Pavilion was most impacted by the flooding, and water and mud reached locker rooms and other areas, including the Pavilion Club. He said alternate plans were being made for summer camps, athlete training and other activities that may need to be relocated if facilities remain unavailable.

Guerrero also said that thanks to the “quick actions of many of our own staff and student-athletes, our cherished Hall of Fame and the irreplaceable items within its walls, including the Wooden Den and all 111 of our NCAA National Championship trophies, remain safe and intact.”
