Arturo O’Farrill, Kenny Burrell, Wayne Shorter and Sara Bareilles won awards at Grammys
It was another impressive performance for UCLA at the 2023 Grammy Awards. At the ceremony held Sunday at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, two faculty members and two alumni won awards for their achievements last year.
Professor Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra were awarded best jazz album for “Fandango at the Wall in New York,” featuring the Congra Patria Son Jarocho Collective. O’Farrill is a professor of global jazz studies and assistant dean for equity, diversity and inclusion at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
Kenny Burrell Professor of Jazz Studies Terence Blanchard composed and conducted “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” which earned best opera recording. The album also featured alumna Angel Blue who won a Grammy for her performance as one of its principal soloists.
Adjunct professor Wayne Shorter took home a prize for his improvised jazz solo on “Endangered Species” — his 12th Grammy Award win. Alumna Sara Bareilles joined several other principal soloists on “Into the Woods (2022 Broadway Cast Recording)” to garner best musical theater album.
UCLA received much recognition this year yet again with five awards that were sponsored by various esteemed members and affiliates of their community.
