According to the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) from ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is ranked the No. 11 university in the world. Approximately 1800 universities were taken into consideration worldwide but only the top 1,000 were ranked.
According to the ARWU press release, “ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of Highly Cited Researchers and the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index produced by Web of Science Group, and per capita performance.”
The top-ranked field at UCLA, according to the survey, is mathematics, with UCLA earning a worldwide rank of 8. Computer science came in ranked number 9 in the world while UCLA’s chemistry program was ranked 11.
Other California universities that ranked among the top 20 worldwide include the University of California, Berkley (ranked No. 5), California Institute of Technology (ranked No. 9), University of California, San Diego (ranked No. 18) and University of California, San Francisco (ranked No. 20).
