Remains most applied-to four-year university in the nation
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has once again become the most applied-to four-year university in the nation for fall 2023 admission, with more than 169,800 applications received.
According to the university officials on Tuesday, approximately 145,900 of these applications came from freshman applicants and nearly 24,000 came from transfer applicants. Although freshman applications have dipped by 2.6% from last year’s record-breaking total, they still remain at near-historic highs after a surge of around 37,000 or roughly 34% in the last three years.
The proportion of freshman applicants from historically underrepresented groups remained unchanged from last year. Among those from California, African Americans represented 7% of the total, while Chicano/Latino and American Indian students accounted for 35% and 1%, respectively.
Moreover, UCLA continued to attract freshman applicants from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds with first-generation students representing almost half (41%) of all California freshman applications and low-income students accounting for another significant portion (45%).
Applications from transfer students decreased by 3.8%, which is consistent with University of California-wide figures reflecting enrollment declines at community colleges in California and nationwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this decrease in numbers overall, transfer applicants from underrepresented groups and diverse socioeconomic backgrounds remained robust and consistent with last year’s totals.
The university officials expressed their excitement about this remarkable achievement amid challenging times due to the ongoing pandemic. They also emphasized their commitment to providing equal opportunities to all students regardless of their background or financial status.
UCLA continues to be a top-ranked public research university globally renowned for its academic excellence and outstanding student experience.
