The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA has been ranked among the nation’s top 20 medical schools in research and primary care in an annual assessment released recently.
The medical school also ranked in the top 15 in multiple specialties in the U.S. News & World Report evaluation.
“The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is among the nation’s best, with extraordinarily strong competition for student admission and residency training,” said Steven M. Dubinett, MD, interim dean. “Talented faculty, innovative curriculum, a robust research program, unwavering commitment to health equity and alignment with a leading clinical enterprise make us a top destination for future leaders in patient care and scientific research.”
The school placed #13 in primary care and #19 in research. In the assessment’s diversity index, the Geffen School of Medicine is #14.
The specialty rankings were based on a reputational survey of medical school deans and senior faculty across the country. The Geffen School of Medicine placed in the top 15 in five of eight specialties: anesthesiology (9); surgery (10); pediatrics (11); internal medicine (12) and psychiatry (12).
Data used to calculate the research and primary care rankings also included, among other factors, applicant admission rates, student scores on the Medical College Admission Test, faculty-to student ratios, research expenditures and percentage of graduates practicing in primary care.
The diversity index was based on enrollment of under-represented groups and other factors.
Medical school faculty and resident physician trainees provide patient care at UCLA Health hospitals on the UCLA campus in the Westwood area of Los Angeles and Santa Monica, as well as in community clinics across Southern California. Medical students receive training at these hospitals, at partner hospitals and with community groups in the region.
In the most recent U.S. News & World Report evaluation of hospitals, UCLA Health ranked #1 in both Los Angeles and California and #3 nationally.
In the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings of universities, UCLA was named the nation’s top public university for the fifth consecutive year.
