UCLA Event Held To Address Rise in Hate Crimes and Promote Diversity
Approximately 200 representatives from various law enforcement agencies and community leaders gathered at UCLA on Friday for the third installment of the “United Against Hate” outreach event organized by the United States Attorney’s Office.
The event aimed to address the escalating issue of hate crimes and incidents across the nation. Dolores Huerta, renowned labor activist and Chicano civil rights leader delivered remarks alongside United States Attorney Martin Estrada.
“Hate is meant to divide us, so it is imperative that we come together as a community to reject these acts and embrace the diversity of this nation, which has always been its strength. United, we can overcome hate,” remarked U.S. Attorney Estrada during the event.
United Against Hate, initiated by the Department of Justice in 2022, seeks to raise awareness about hate crimes and foster collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The event featured panel discussions on federal, state, and local initiatives to combat hate, with leaders from various civil rights enforcement agencies sharing insights.
Participants also received training on identifying, reporting, and responding to hate crimes, with presentations by the Justice Department’s Community Relations Service and LA Civil Rights. The event concluded with a reception hosted by UCLA for community and governmental leaders.
This marks the third “United Against Hate” event hosted by the United States Attorney’s Office, with plans for future presentations across the district. Community organizations interested in partnering with the office for similar events can send their request to USACAC.CV-CivilRights@usdoj.gov.
Individuals who believe they have been victims of hate crimes or witnesses to such incidents are urged to report them to local police and the FBI. Additionally, incidents can be reported to the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division or by filing a civil rights complaint with the United States Attorney’s Office.
