It’s a toe-tappin’, finger-snappin’ tribute to the 50s, the culminating production of the St. Monica/Santa Monica Playhouse Play Project, an innovative theatre enrichment program now in its seventh year.
Directed by Santa Monica Playhouse Co-Artistic Director Chris DeCarlo and Associate Director Serena Dolinsky, and written by award-winning playwright Evelyn Rudie, with words and music by E. Rudie and Matthew Wrather, “UP ON CLOUD 9†is 1950’s America come alive, complete with hair spray, beat poets, the U.S.O., and dial telephones. Whether you lived the ‘50’s, or only read about them, now you can experience first hand those wild, wonderful, and oh so simple days when love, laughter and lipstick were the hep topics of the day, and father really did know best (as long as mother was around to advise him).
The St Monica/Santa Monica Playhouse enrichment program allows students to excel in theatre, study and life skills, offering performance, dance, voice, music, make-up, costuming, improvisation and theatre games with language arts, reading, research and creative writing, as well as communication and group interaction, team work and pride of accomplishment. The Playhouse, currently celebrating Part II of its 50th anniversary of continuous educational and theatrical services to the community, and St. Monica Catholic Elementary School, observing its 81st anniversary this year, are two of the city’s oldest and most respected organizations providing services for youth.
