A man was killed early Monday morning when two vessels crashed into each other in the water off Catalina Island was the son of a former San Francisco 49ers chief executive officer, a broadcast report said.
Family members identified the man as 26-year-old Michael Harris of San Francisco, according to NBC4, which also reported that Harris was a former student at the University of San Diego and his father, Peter Harris, was the 49ers’ CEO in the early 2000s.
Peter Harris’ LinkedIn account showed he was the 49ers’ CEO in 2000-2004.
Three other people were injured and another remained missing resulting from the crash that happened about 1:20 a.m., about a quarter-mile northeast of Casino Point.
The U.S. Coast Guard received a report that a dingy with five people aboard collided with another vessel, the Coast Guard’s SondraKay Kneen said.
One passenger aboard the dingy was confirmed dead. Two suffered minor injuries and one person suffered a head injury.
The injured were taken to UCLA Medical Center. One of them was the deceased man’s girlfriend, according to NBC4, which cited Peter Harris’ Facebook.
The Coast Guard launched a 45-foot response boat and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, along with resources from the Baywatch Isthmus, Baywatch Avalon and Avalon Harbor Patrol, to search for the missing passenger, Kneen said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau deployed divers and an underwater sonar scanner and was assisting county lifeguards in an effort to find the missing boater.
