Westfield’s $800 million Century City transformation entices Norstrom to relocate in 2017

Westfield Century City’s 2017 transformation will feature a three-level Nordstrom, a completely remodeled three-level Bloomingdale’s, a brand-new two-level Macy’s, as well as the world-renowned Eataly.
Westfield Century City’s 2017 transformation will feature a three-level Nordstrom, a completely remodeled three-level Bloomingdale’s, a brand-new two-level Macy’s, as well as the world-renowned Eataly.

Westsiders with a love of shopping, retail therapy, and fashion will be delighted come 2017, as Westfield Century City will complete its multi-million dollar makeover that will include a handful of new and revamped entities.

The $800 million transformation will expand the shopping center to span 1.2 million square feet in order to house a quartet of bigger and better retail options.

Specifically, the final results will be comprised of a three-level Nordstrom, a three-level Bloomingdale’s, a two-level Macy’s, and the debut of the world-renowned Eataly.

Greg Miles, Westfield U.S. Chief Operating Officer, described the incoming combination of Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, and Eataly “within one sophisticated location” as “a major milestone” in the world of retail.

Whereas the existing Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s will be revamped, upscale fashion retailer Nordstrom and high-end Italian food market Eataly will be brand-new additions to the shopping center.

Nordstrom announced Feb. 24 its imminent relocation from Westside Pavilion to Westfield Century City.

According to Dan Evans, Director of Business Public Relations at Nordstrom, Inc., an array of different benefits will accompany the big move to Century City.

“We believe a brand new store at Westfield Century City will help us do a better job at serving customers,” Evans said. “Moving to Westfield Century City also gives us more flexibility to build a brand new store with our latest design concepts, including new restaurant options, more natural light, improved merchandise displays, and a more open floor plan.”

Evans said that the purpose of Nordstrom’s newest design concepts is to accommodate to the developing needs of the customers.

“Since our customers’ definition of service constantly changes, we’re evolving our store environments to help us remain modern and relevant with our customers,” Evans said. “While the design isn’t final yet, our new stores are more open [and] more flexible to evolve […] with simple flow for customers to shop how they like to.”

Evans attributed the local success and growth of the retailer to the loyalty of Nordstrom’s West L.A. customers.

“We opened at Westside Pavilion in 1983 and owe our customers in West L.A. a lot for helping us to build our business over the years and we hope they will move with us in 2017,” Evans explained. “We look forward to bringing a brand new store to our customers and offer them the best store experience possible.”

Evans said that the Westside can expect to see Nordstrom at Westfield Century City by fall 2017. The tentative timeline as well as a specific opening date will be provided as the Nordstrom team continues to progress through the design/construction process.

The other addition to the Century City shopping center, Eataly, will be the Italian marketplace’s first West Coast location. An indoor hub of Italian treats, Eataly is known for its well-rounded combination of retail shops, restaurants, and even a cooking school.

Alex Saper, Chief Operating Officer of Eataly, told Century City News in October that West L.A.’s favorable weather wound up influencing his team’s planning process.

For example, ideas involving potential outdoor seating and juice bars have been circulating among the Eataly team. Saper also mentioned that Eataly would be working with local producers in order to take full advantage of its surroundings, although there were no specific plans set in stone.

In addition to offering authentic Italian delicacies, artisanal products, and local produce, Eataly will also boast a rooftop bar and lounge with panoramic views of the surrounding city.

Nordstrom and Eataly will both contribute to the overall vision of Westfield Century City as a premier shopping center in Los Angeles, according to the Westfield U.S. Chief Operating Officer.

“[The transformation] perfectly accords with our conviction that Century City become not only the unquestioned epicenter of style on the Westside of Los Angeles, but also take its place as Westfield’s next iconic destination that completely revolutionizes the modern shopping experience,” Miles said.
With incoming restaurants, cafes, event/entertainment spaces, and more customer amenities, the team at Westfield Century City hopes to “provide an immersive sensory experience unprecedented in the modern retail space.”

Westfield Century City is located at 10250 Santa Monica Blvd. For more information, call 310.277.3898 or visit westfield.com/centurycity.
