The initiative aims to enhance community pride, boost local business revenue, and address urban blight through public art corridors and façade improvements
The Westwood Village Improvement Association Board of Directors will address a public art and beautification project during its meeting on Thursday, July 17 at Splatterz Studio, 1036 Broxton Ave., Studio D.
The 20-minute agenda item will feature a recommendation from the Research and Innovation Committee to collaborate with the California Artists Coalition of Los Angeles using the 1% Art Development Fee, a mandatory fee for commercial projects exceeding $500,000 in construction costs.
Ayndrea Wilson of CACLA will present a list of vetted local artists, highlighting the potential to create “artistic landmarks” as a smart growth strategy. The initiative aims to enhance community pride, boost local business revenue, and address urban blight through public art corridors and façade improvements.
Projects could be featured on the “Experience LA” tourism website, drawing inspiration from successful efforts like LACMA’s “Urban Lights.”
The 2015 City Council policy allows ADF funds to be used outside development sites in underserved areas, aligning with goals to revitalize Westwood Village. CACLA will oversee funding, liability, maintenance, and artist rights under the Visual Artists Rights Act and California Art Preservation Act, leveraging partnerships with public entities like the Department of Public Works and private firms such as Vista Paints.
