Westwood’s Landmark Regent Theatre to Close

Landmark2

The Landmark Theatre on Broxton Avenue in Westwood will close its doors to make way for two restaurants.

The news was first reported by Los Angeles magazine, which revealed that the owners filed a request with the City of Los Angeles on Feb. 17 to convert the 50-year-old theatre into two restaurants.

The renovations are being undertaken by Nadel Architects and the company is slated to come before the Westwood Village Design Review Board on March 15.

Originally built as retail stores in the 1940s, the Regent was converted to a movie theatre in 1966 by Laemmle. It was bought by Mann Theatres in the 1970s and eventually taken over by The Regent in 2002. Over the past 15 years, the single-screen theatre has built a reputation for screening foreign and independent films.

The loss of the Broxton theatre means only two of Westwood’s original 1930’s movie theatres will remain: the Bruin and the Fox Village, both of which are Regency theatres.

Currently there’s no word on exactly when the theatre will close or what type of restaurants the owners plan to replace it with.
