A young man who allegedly fired at Los Angeles police officers at a South Los Angeles gang party was in custody Tuesday on $1 million bail, authorities said.
Quentin Durity, 23, was wounded in the shoulder when an officer fired back at him during the incident, which occurred at 10:35 p.m. Sunday at 99th and Hoover streets, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. No officers were injured.
Durity was booked on suspicion of attempted murder on a police officer, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said this morning at police headquarters. No court date was immediately set.
Three other men were arrested at the scene on suspicion of weapons violations, and police seized nine firearms, including handguns, a rifle and an assault weapon, Beck said.
Gang officers were patrolling in the area when they saw the gathering, which was taking place at a known “gang congregation point,” and they stopped to investigate, Beck said.
At that point, people began running away, and a person fired a shot at officers, Beck said. One officer fired one shot in response, Beck said.
As the officers were detaining people for questioning, a man later identified as Durity was seen in the area with a gunshot wound, and he was taken into custody, Beck said.
Investigators later determined that a number of gang members had gathered at the location in the wake of a recent gang-related shooting, and that it is possible that “retaliation was imminent” had the officers not stopped to investigate, Beck said.
