LA KISS of the Arena Football League will hold open tryouts today at Whittier College, part of its efforts to rebound from a 3-15 record during its inaugural season.
“We’re looking for players,” coach Bob McMillen said. “We were fortunate enough to find two good football players from our open tryouts (defensive back A.J. Cruz and fullback Sam Campbell) last season. Hopefully, we can find a couple of players who can make our team.”
The tryout will include a 40-yard dash, short shuttle run, long jump, the “L drill” where players run around cones positioned in the shape of an L, and specific drills for each position group, McMillen said.
McMillen said he expects about 200 players to try out.
“This is a great opportunity for guys who maybe have been out of football for a while and can play the game of football and maybe have never had the opportunity to showcase their talents,” McMillen said.
Every AFL team annually conducts open tryouts.
“It’s a great opportunity to find unknown talent,” said McMillen, whose AFL playing career came as a result of an open tryout. He went on to play nine seasons in the league and was elected to its Hall of Fall in 2013.
