An attempt to break the Guinness world record for the largest gathering of people wearing sombreros will be made at tonight’s Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim game at Angel Stadium.
At the start of the fifth inning, fans will be asked to wear for five consecutive minutes the sombreros they will have received upon entering the stadium for the game against the Seattle Mariners. After the five minutes, a Guinness adjudicator will officially certify the new record.
The current record is unclear. A group of 1,008 wore sombreros at Portland’s Cinco de Mayo fiesta in 2012, but the record was not certified by Guinness. Another record attempt was made Saturday at Portland’s Cinco de Mayo fiesta, but it has not been officially certified.
World records have been set at Angel games each of the past five seasons — largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets (2010); largest gathering of people wearing costume masks (2011); largest gathering of people wearing cowboy hats (2012); largest gathering of people wearing wigs (2013); and largest gathering of people wearing Santa hats (2014).
