The Los Angeles City Council’s Homelessness and Poverty Committee and Council President Herb Wesson are expected today to declare homelessness an emergency.
The committee is also expected to commit $100 million to combating homelessness. The first use of the funds is projected on Jan. 1 with permanent supportive housing and shelter the priority, according to an aide to a councilman.
Members of the City Council are scheduled to gather outside City Hall this morning to discuss details of the plan.
The council’s efforts are expected to “complement” Mayor Eric Garcetti’s plan to combat homelessness, which he has said will be released soon, according to a statement from Wesson’s office.
Garcetti is scheduled to be at the event.
