The Marina dey Rey-stationed Coast Guard deployed their cutter Halibut to assist with the search of a man missing yesterday, after he was reported missing in the Pacific Ocean off Manhattan Beach.
The search was called off this morning.
D.J. Jeffries of Hawthorne, a former U.S. Army soldier, was reported missing in the Pacific Ocean off Manhattan Beach after going for a swim on Tuesday at about 5:30 p.m.
“It is always a difficult decision to end an active search, however,
Coast Guard crews saturated the area for 16 hours in search of the missing
swimmer,” said Jennifer Williams, captain and commanding officer of Coast Guard
Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach.
The Coast Guard and county lifeguards started their search Tuesday evening and suspended their efforts at 9 p.m. because of darkness. The search continued this morning at dawn, and had a helicopter in the air before 7 a.m.
A MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Los Angeles was also deployed to assist in the search alongside a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Station Los Angeles, according to Coast Guard officials.
At about 8:30 a.m., the Coast Guard announced it was suspending its
search, but sheriff’s divers would continue searching the water.
