An Evening at Studio 53

Suggested attire for the Odyssey Ball at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel was “Boots and Bowties.” The gala honored Mark B. Faries, MD, who received the “Duke Award,” and Ruth Weil, recipient of the Donald L. Morton Legend Award.
Funds received from the event benefitted the John Wayne Cancer Institute, named in honor of the Duke himself, whose portrayal of rugged cowboys and brave soldiers in scads of films earned him an Academy Award for “True Grit.”
Weatherman Kaj Goldberg welcomed the 500 guests and noted that “cowboys were the first superheroes.” One of Wayne‘s biggest battles was his fight to defeat cancer, and he was the first celeb. to bring his personal fight onto the world stage. As his son, Patrick Wayne, chairman of the J.W. Cancer Institute stated, “While cancer has not been fully vanquished, we’ve gotten into some punches worthy of John Wayne.”
Kudos to Anita Swift, John’s granddaughter and president of the auxiliary, co-chairs of the gala, Martha Harper, Colleen Pennell, Beth Rawjee and Jessica Royer, and their hardworking committees for a rip-roaring rodeo, which raised over $750,000 to fight this dreaded disease.
So now, if we have whet your appetite toward Western garb, you will have the opportunity to don your couturier cowboy/cowgirl costumes and attend Share’s 63rd Annual Boomtown Gala, “An Evening at Studio 53.” The date is Saturday, May 21, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The star-studded event sports guests in “dressy western attire,” featuring dinner and entertainment, starring Grammy Award-winning vocalist Hazel Payne of “A Taste of Honey,” comedian Yakov Smirnoff, and American disco and soul band, The Trammps.
The highlight is a series of dance numbers featuring the ladies of Share, and choreographed by award winning Anita Mann. Noted radio personality Rick Dees serves as Master of Ceremonies; Gary Smith produces. A fabulous silent and private auction rounds out the event.
