CA Controller John Chiang to Receive “Good Guy†award at NWPC convention

Newport Beach, CA. (July 23, 2009) – State Controller John Chiang will receive a “Good Guy†award and LA attorney Gloria Allred will be special guest speaker at separate events during the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC) convention in Newport Beach, CA, August 7-9.
The 19th biennial convention, hosted by the California Caucus, is at the Radisson Newport Beach Resort.
“The convention will also address paycheck equality, money management for women, reproductive health, and filling the political pipeline,” said California Caucus President Teray Stephens.
Gloria Allred, prominent Los Angeles attorney and active feminist, is the special guest speaker at the NWPC-CA fundraising luncheon August 7. A graduate of Loyola Law School, she is has practiced law for over 32 years.
Allred is the winner of countless honors for pioneering legal work on behalf of women’s rights and rights for minorities discriminated against because of gender, race, age, sexual orientation, or physical condition. She founded and currently serves as president of the Women’s Equal Rights Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Friday, August 7 campaign training workshops feature Getting to 50+1; Media Messaging; Campaign Image and Voice; Fundraising; Voter Contact; Online Technologies and Social Media; and Training the Trainer. All-day pass is $40 including breakfast and evening Diversity Reception.
California Assemblywoman Fiona Ma of San Francisco will emcee the Diversity Reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. during which honorees will receive the NWPC Women of Courage award.
This award honors women of diverse backgrounds who typify women’s leadership and who have demonstrated courage by taking stands on unpopular or controversial issues to further civil rights and equality. Attendance is $10 for non-members.
A Title IX panel discussion on gender equity in education will be Saturday, August 8, followed by honors for past NWPC presidents.
Silent auction items for Saturday night festivities include two signed lithographs by March Fong Eu, CA Secretary of State, 1975-1994; beautifully framed and signed colored pencil drawing by U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein; and a week’s stay at a three-bedroom home in Mazatlan, Mexico.
