This fall, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area invites you to participate in its annual Spirit of the Mountains photo contest. Submissions will be accepted October 1-October 31, 2009.
Do you enjoy exploring the mountains with your camera? Consider heading out to the park and gathering some great shots for this year’s contest. Categories include: Plants, Animals, Scenic Shots, Young Photographers, People in Parklands, and a special category in celebration of the park’s 30th anniversary called Memories of the Mountains.
This contest has inspired many regional amateur photographers from the Southern California area to explore and discover new special places within the Santa Monica Mountains. One past winner reflected on his experiences taking photographs in the mountains, “Even though the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is very close to a well populated, urban environment, there are many places – especially on foggy days like this – where you feel like you are thousands of miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city, where you’re more likely to see a deer or coyote than another person.â€
