The National Women’s Political Caucus celebrates the 90th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage & the 2010 Women of Achievement Awards

On August 29th, the National Women’s Political Caucus of California (NWPC CA) is celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage with its “2010 Women of Achievement Awards†summer reception followed by a special performance of the comedic show “100% Happy 88% of the Time†from Beth Lapides. The celebration will take place from 1 to 4 pm at the Renberg Theater in West Hollywood.

The National Women’s Political Caucus
The mission of the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC) is to identify, recruit, train and support progressive women for election and appointment to public office. NWPC was founded in the midst of the modern American women’s movement when 320 women from 26 states met under the leadership of feminists including Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinem, and Betty Friedan to form the caucus on July 11, 1971. Within three years of the founding, the caucus succeeded in increasing female state officeholders by 36 percent.

California ‘electeds’ which have been endorsed and supported by NWPC include: Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, CA Secretary of State Debra Bowen, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, Congresswomen Judy Chu, and Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, among many others.

“The work we do to recruit, support and elect women to public office is critically important,†said Teray Stephens, President of NWPC California. “Women make up over 50% of the population, yet represent only 16 percent of officeholders in California. That number is projected to decrease after the general election because of legislators terming out. This event is a great opportunity to celebrate the 90 years of work women have been doing and help NWPC fulfill its mission†.

Beth Lapides
Celebrated for her visionary perspective, comedian Beth Lapides has been politically active for years, providing entertainment and inspiration for progressive women’s causes, including her own campaign to make the First Lady an elected (and paid) position. Her latest show is evolutionary entertainment that combines story, standup, multi-media, music and metaphysics. She takes the audience on a journey and sends them home laughing and excited about our ability to really be happy – at least 88% of the time.

Beth has appeared on Politically Incorrect, NPR’s “All Things Considered,†and served as the irreverent self-help correspondent for ABC Radio’s Satellite Sisters. Top critics have called Beth’s work: “ABOVE & BEYOND” (The New Yorker), “HILARIOUS” (NPR), “LIBERATING†(Entertainment Weekly), “MIND-EXPANDING!” (LA Weekly), “ENLIGHTENING!” (Whole Life Times), and “SMART & FUNNY!” (LA Times).
