The Jr. Philharmonic is one of the oldest and most prestigious young people’s symphony orchestras with its rehearsal home at Horace Mann School. Founded on January 22, 1937 by its late conductor, Dr. Ernst Katz, the Jr. Phil’s motto is “Give Youth A Chance To Be Heard.†Conductor Greene is Katz’s nephew and is continuing his uncle’s legacy. The Jr. Phil is a young people’s symphony with alumni from seven decades.
The Jr. Philharmonic performed its first concerts in Beverly Hills during the 1940s and 50s at Pickfair, home of legendary motion picture star Mary Pickford. Years later, the orchestra inaugurated the Beverly Hills Live series with one of many concerts at Greystone Mansion. It performed the first concert at the Beverly Hills Civic Center. In 1997, the orchestra performed a concert on the roof of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel as part of the city’s holiday lighting ceremony. The Jr. Phil annually performs at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
