“A Day Without a Disposable Bag†in Malibu celebrates the third anniversary of the City’s ban on the use of plastic shopping bags, a move that has significantly reduced pollution and protected wildlife.
“The City’s ban on plastic bags sends a clear message that Malibu is serious about our quest to clean, preserve and protect our environment, especially our ocean and marine life,†Mayor Laura Rosenthal said. “This is our legacy to the children and future generations.â€
“A Day Without a Disposable Bag†is co-sponsored by Malibu High School, Banana Republic, Surfrider Foundation and Heal the Bay. The day features a free reusable tote bag giveaway from 11:00am to 1:00pm and again from 3:30pm to 5:00pm at Ralph’s Market in Malibu Colony Plaza; Pavilions Market at Heathercliff Road; Pacific Coast Greens at 22601 Pacific Coast Highway; Banana Republic in Malibu Village Plaza and in the Cross Creek Road shopping district.
The Bag Monster® will also make special guest appearances at these locations.
The City of Malibu was among the first in the state to adopt a ban on plastic bags. The ordinance applies to all City facilities and City sponsored events, all commercial and nonprofit retailers and vendors, and to any retailer or vendor selling goods at a facility owned by the City or on public property.
Petroleum-based plastic bags do not biodegrade, but break down into tiny pieces of toxic waste that enter our food chain by contaminating our water and soil. Each year approximately 6 billion plastic single-use shopping bags are used in Los Angeles County, equivalent to 600 bags per person every year.
