Beach=Culture presents an Introduction to Artist in Residence Sandro Meallet

Stop by for this introductory reading and talk by Sandro Meallet, the newest Beach House Artist in Residence! Meallet (pronounced “Millay”) will speak about plans for his 10-week tenure, read from his work and answer questions from Beach=Culture guests. Meallet will be available on Saturdays from 11am-3pm throughout his residency at the Marion Davies Guest House to field questions about his process and the craft of writing. Stay tuned and come back for his other public events, including a work-in-progress reading and a writing workshop!

Sandro Meallet is a Venice-based novelist whose first book Edgewater Angels, about growing up in the housing projects of San Pedro, received the California Book Award for First Fiction and was on the Los Angeles Times best seller list. His second novel, “The Coming of Rage”, is currently out to publishers. He holds an MFA in writing from Johns Hopkins, a Masters in History from the New School, and a BA from UC Santa Cruz.

About the Artist Residency: In honor of Marion Davies’ own artistry and her support of artists, and to further the work of the City of Santa Monica to promote the arts, the City sponsors one Resident Artist for the Winter and one for the Spring semesters at the Beach House. The Resident shares their creative efforts with the public at intervals throughout their tenure, so please check back with us to reserve your seats to future events. The Winter Residency takes place from November 15 – January 24 and focuses on the discipline of writing; future residencies will explore various disciplines including visual arts, choreography, and music composition. The Resident will be working out of a second floor office in the Marion Davies Guest House for the duration, and will hold public office hours, periodic readings and workshops throughout their tenure.

Stop by early for information on the Beach House and Guest House tours by docents from the Santa Monica Conservancy before every evening event, first come, first served. PLEASE NOTE that the Back on the Beach Cafe closes at 3pm on Mondays, and there are no other food or drink facilities onsite – but the Beach House is a great place for a picnic!

Tickets are free but seating is limited and reservations are required. If you would like to attend, please reserve at http://beachculture51.eventbrite.com. Please plan to arrive by 6:15pm to retain your reservation. Late seating, even for reservation-holders, is not guaranteed. To adjust or cancel your reservation for this event, email beachhouse@smgov.net. We appreciate your keeping in touch!

Directions: The Beach House is located at 415 Pacific Coast Highway, Santa Monica, CA 90402 on the west side of Pacific Coast Highway, a half mile north of the California Incline and a half mile south of Chautauqua Blvd. Plenty of public parking is available – enter off PCH at the Beach House Way traffic light. Parking: $3/hr or $6/day, but event parking for this community cultural event is free after 5pm. The facility is also easily accessible by foot or bike from the beach bike path, although the beach closes at sunset. There is ample bike parking at racks throughout the site – remember to bring your own lock.
