A book comes brilliantly to life as Books with Feet performs F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless classic about popularity and social pressure in a performance where every written word is performed – the dialogue and the narrative. How far do we go to fit in and still hold on to ourselves? Fitzgerald’s classic tale of a “new generation†of American youth whose excesses astounded their elders is even fresher and more accessible today, 90 years down the road. Books with Feet is a nonprofit organization that brings timeless literary classics to life, transforming them into staged performances that include every written word. Their rendition of Bernice Bobs Her Hair was previously presented in the City of West Hollywood as part of its BIG READ program and was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for Arts, BIG READ & the City of West Hollywood. Author F. Scott
Fitzgerald was a famously fast-living author whose works of fiction documented the lives of the young, hip people of his generation, women envisioned as forward-thinking, revolutionary “flappers,†and men, who either narrowly missed or survived the horrors of World War I, as “philosophers.†Featuring Laura Boccaletti, Emily DeRenzis, Sarah Kelly, Scott Mikels, Greg Nystrom, Tara Redfield, joined by Mathias Dill, Adam Hunter Howard, Derek Kokinda, Jenna Mate, Elliot Schiff and Emanuel Ward. Directed by Genevieve Morrill. Produced by Rebecca Herrick. Fri, March 5 & Sat, March 6 at 8:00 pm; Sun, March 7 at 6:00 pm. $20. Saturday’s performance includes a post-show reception. Santa Monica Playhouse Main Stage, 1211 4th Street (Between Wilshire & Arizona), Santa Monica, CA 90401. By public transportation: take the Santa Monica Blue Bus or the LA Metro Rapid #720 and exit at 4th and Wilshire.
