LOS ANGELES, April 14, 2009 — Former students up to 103 years old will be among those celebrating Brockton Avenue Elementary School’s 90th anniversary on April 25. The alumni reunion is one of many festivities planned to observe the milestone of the small West Los Angeles school, which is among the smallest in the Los Angeles Unified School District and renowned for its spirit of family.
“Through the years we have been known as the little school where everyone knows everyone,†said principal Kim Lattimore. “We are excited to bring together many old childhood friends and to celebrate our successes and share our vision of the future for Brockton.â€
The anniversary celebration features non-stop entertainment including performances by Brockton’s award-winning drill team, the Community Folk Dancers — who have been a part of the school’s celebrations for more than 30 years, “Kymata†Saint Sophia Greek Dance Group, Black Reign musical group and Alma Del Valley Oaxacan performance group.
Ceremonies also include burial of a time capsule and speeches by Councilman Bill Rosendahl and Deputy Mayor Miriam Long. Ronald McDonald and a wandering magician will also make appearances.
Brockton’s Broadcast News Crew will capture the celebration and interview former Brockton students at the event to post online to share with the world.
“Our students past and present are proud of their school,†said Lattimore. “This is a place where children, parents, teachers and staff make memories that they cherish for a lifetime.â€
The event begins at 10 am and is open to the public. Brockton Avenue Elementary is located at 1309 Armacost Avenue in Los Angeles.
