Pregnant women, their partners and children are invited to attend The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Awareness Day and Community Baby Shower to hear a lecture on childbirth and participate in a family yoga class on Sunday, August 18, 2013 from 12:30-4:00 pm at Christine Emerson Reed Park at 1133 7th Street in Santa Monica.
The lecture will help moms-to-be learn about The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative (MFCI) developed by The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS), a coalition of individuals and national organizations with concern for the care and well-being of mothers, babies, and families.
The mission is to promote a wellness model of maternity care that will improve birth outcomes and substantially reduce costs. The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative (MFCI) is a 10-step, evidence-based plan is based on the principles of normalcy of childbirth, autonomy, empowerment, do no harm and responsibility. This plan will help women have satisfying and empowered births in the hospital , birth center or at home with a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) or a Licensed Midwife (LM).
The mother-, baby-, and family-friendly model focuses on prevention and wellness as the alternatives to high-cost screening, diagnosis, and treatment programs. The event is hosted by Wholistic Maternal and Newborn Health, a Los Angeles based organization of maternity care professionals working to improve maternity care quality and experience for women and infants and offering education and supportive services for pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding (http://wholisticmaternalnewbornhealth.org).
This event is co-sponsored by Million Mamas Movement (http://millionmamasmovement) and Birth Partners (http://birthandbeyond.net)
Event activities include: henna belly tattoo, children’s face painting, family yoga, live African drumming, hoola-hooping, raffles and a chance to meet “Mother-Friendly†maternity care providers. A vegetarian lunch will be provided. Fees are $20 per family in advance and $25 at the door.
