For their final concert of the 2012-2013 season on Tuesday, May 7, Chamber Music Palisades’ artistic directors have chosen works by Bach, Martinu, Brahms, and Saint-Saens to showcase the artistry of guest artists clarinetist Michele Zukovsky and cellist Antonio Lysy.
Now in its 16th consecutive season, CMP presents all concerts in the sanctuary of St. Matthew’s Parish at 1031 Bienveneda in Pacific Palisades. Concerts begin at 8:00pm and tickets will be available at the door at $30. Students are admitted free.
A cellist of true international status, Antonio Lysy will open the program with J. S. Bach’s Suite in d minor for solo cello. He will then be joined by flutist Susan Greenberg and pianist Delores Stevens in the Trio for flute, cello and piano by Bohuslav Martinu. Following intermission, the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s principal clarinetist, Michele Zukovsky, will be joined with pianist Stevens in the Sonata in Eb Major, op. 120 by Johannes Brahms. Zukovsky and Stevens will then join flutist Susan Greenberg for the Tarantella, op. 6 by Camille Saint-Saens as the final performance of the evening.
Michele Zukovsky started playing the clarinet at the age of seven and joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1961 after extensive studies with her father who was principal clarinet of the LA Phil at the time. In addition to solo performances with the Philharmonic at the Music center and Hollywood Bowl, she performs regularly with the orchestra’s chamber music society and the new music group. She has collaborated with the Angeles and St. Petersburg String Quartets and in New York has appeared with Concerts at the Y, Ravinia, Lincoln Center and Mostly Mozart ensembles. She is currently on the faculty of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California.
Literally a world-class cellist, Antonio Lysy has appeared with the Royal Philharmonic and Philharmonia Orchestras of London, Camerata Academica of Salzburg, Camerata Lysy Gstaad, Zurich Tonhalle, Zagreb Soloists, Orchestra di Padova e il Veneto, Israel Sinfonietta, City of London Sinfonia and the Montreal and Toronto Symphonies as well as the Thirteen Strings of Ottowa. In 1989 he founded the annual Incontri in Terra di Siena Chamber Music Festival in Tuscany, Italy. In 2003 he accepted the position of Professor at the University of California at Los Angeles.
Chamber Music Palisades,in addition to presenting the long-established and beloved chamber works, CMP has commissioned and performed sixteen new compositions over the years, many coming from local composers.
