Diesel Star Wars
Dressed as Jedi and Stormtroopers, Star Wars fans showed their support for Sean Williams’ newest novel, “The Force Unleashed.†On the evening of August 21, fans gathered in the dimly lit Diesel bookstore on Cross Creek Road for a very personal signing of Williams’ latest novel. The book is based on a LucasArts video game to be released September 16.

The award-winning Australian author of over 60 published short stories and 25 novels, came to the United States for the World Science Fiction Convention held annually in Denver, Colorado.

Before catching a non-stop to Sydney, Williams spent his last evening among a few of Malibu’s most enthusiastic Star Wars fans. Although the fans were small in stature, their passion was evident as Williams read some of his favorite excerpts to the eager crowd. Also in attendance were Star Wars characters Darth Vader, Boba Fett and one of the Imperial Guards.

Chili Cook-Off Coming to a Close?
The 26 Annual Chili Cook-0ff August 31 through Labor Day (September 3) may be the last at the familiar site. Now that the site is officially “Legacy Park,†the Kiwanis Club is seeking a new location for next year’s event.

From the Porsche Cayman awarded each year to one lucky winner of the raffle, to the display of Land Rovers and the increasingly popular, “indigestion chili,†the Labor Day event is aimed at reminding the locals of the nostalgic value of the infamous chili cook-off. Visitors sample chili, enjoy carnival rides and listen to live music.

Sal Cirnigliaro is president of the Malibu Kiwanis Club, which sponsors the event each year. He hopes that someone will offer a new site for next year’s chili cook-off.

The 20-acre parcel has hosted the 10-15,000 visitors a year, benefiting local children’s charities as part of Kiwanis International.
