During Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg’s formative childhood years, audiences also appreciated the orthodox Romantic Mendelssohn, but the radical even revolutionary work of Chopin was so unique as to be severely under appreciated. Fortunately Grieg’s first music teacher was his mother, who appreciated the unique and eclectic styles of inventive composers and expose.
By the time he became friends with the French Impressionist painters he had began to interject ‘Impressionism” to chamber music — He also brought us the modern String Quartet.which this evening’s performance will draw upon –his String Quartet in G Minor, Op 27.
At the pre-concert talk we’ll look into the personality of this unusual composer who was to be the most famous ever produced by Norway and we’ll look at the evolving path leading to 20th Century music; we’ll see a bit of how the era of ‘change’ in which he lived as well as his associations with the leaders of the French Impressionist painters influenced Grieg and began the transition toward Debussy..
