Fox’s World Series Game 6 coverage hits record viewership low

Viewership for Fox’s coverage of Game 6 of the World Series set a record low, with the Kansas City Royals 10-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants averaging 13.37 million viewers, according to live-plus-same-day figures released Wednesday by Nielsen.

The previous low for Game 6 was 19.18 million viewers set in 2013 when the Boston Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to win the Series. The record high for a Game 6 was 54.86 million viewers, set in 1980 for NBC’s telecast of the Philadelphia Phillies defeating Kansas City to win their first World Series.

The record low was the fourth for the Series, following Games 1, 4 and 5.

The game lost each half-hour from 8-10 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, but was first from 10-10:30 p.m. and 10:30-11 p.m.

The World Series has aired on Fox each year since 2000.

Records for World Series viewership date back to 1969. Viewership figures are not available for Game 2 of the 1976 Series and Game 7 of the 1986 Series.

CBS was the night’s most-watched network, averaging 14.44 million viewers. It had the night’s two most-watched programs, “NCIS,” which averaged 17.53 million viewers from 8-9 p.m., and “NCIS: New Orleans,” which averaged 16.09 million from 9-10 p.m.

Fox whose prime-time programming consisted of Game 6 and three minutes of a World Series pregame show, was second, averaging 13.55 million. NBC was third, averaging 7.76 million, and ABC fourth, averaging 4.38 million.
