Halloween 2015: Where to take advantage of Saturday’s Westside festivities

West Hollywood Carnaval

The largest Halloween street party in the world happens in West Hollywood! Every year on Oct. 31, which is luckily this year on a Saturday, about half a million people take to the streets of Santa Monica Blvd. to enjoy the wild costumes and uninhibited crowds at the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval. The Carnaval features live entertainment on multiple stages, food vendors, and photo stations. Many of the bars along Santa Monica Blvd. take part with drink specials and patio parties. Montana Avenue Halloween Hop

This year the Montana Avenue Halloween Hop in Santa Monica will be Saturday, Oct. 31 from 3-6 pm! The Halloween Hop is one of the busiest days of the year on Montana Avenue between 6th and 17th Streets. There will be family-fun, shopping, candy, and more. Slue-Foot Sue and the Legend of the Headless Miner

A play about a cowgirl who must defeat a headless miner. Free performances will be held this Saturday, Oct. 31 at 11 am and 2 pm. The two shows will take place at Carlson Park (Braddock Dr. at Motor Ave.), Culver City. For more information, visit www.pretendlab.org.

Venice Canals

Before trick or treating on the Venice Canals, bring the kids for face painting, games and treats at the Canalloween party at the Children’s Park at Linnie and Dell. Halloween in Malibooo at the Malibu Country Mart

The Malibu Country Mart offers a safe and fun free family Halloween event every year. From 4 pm to 6 pm this Saturday, families are invited to trick or treat at participating stores and the kids can enter the costume contest at 6 pm sharp where winners will receive a $100 gift card. Giggles and Hugs Century City Halloween Party

The Century City Giggles and Hugs at Westfield Century City offers an entire afternoon full of safe, family fun this Saturday, Oct. 31. The celebration will start at 3 pm with Halloween crafts, followed by trick-or-treating around the Mall at 4 pm, and finished off with a DJ Dance party and Halloween Party at 6 pm. Halloween Party and Trick-or-Treating at the Westside Pavilion

Gather up your costumed kids and head to the Westside Pavilion for indoor trick or treating this Saturday, Oct. 31. The fun starts at 5 pm and goes until 7 pm. Lil Locks, the children’s hair salon located inside the Pavilion, will host a Halloween party before the trick-or-treating fun starting at 3 pm. 10800 West Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles. Shawn’s Pumpkin Patch

Want to buy a last minute pumpkin? While entry is free there are plenty of attractions (at a small cost) like pony rides, petting zoo, train ride, play land, and slides. Dia De Los Muertos

The City of Santa Monica presents its fourth annual Day of the Dead at Woodlawn Cemetery (1847 14th St.) on Sunday, Nov 1, from 1-4 pm. The family-friendly event focuses on the traditions that are part of this celebration of life and death and offers a variety of ways for participants to discover the meaning, philosophy and history of the day. Starting with an opening procession and ceremonial blessing led by Ketzaliztli dancers, the event features the son jarocho music of Veracruz, Mexico with Conjunto Jardin, the all-female stringed mariachi group Las Colibri, and Day of the Dead inspired folk tales, myths, legends, and personal stories, in both English and Spanish, with storyteller Antonio Sacre. Craft workshops include offerings for loved ones who have passed, calavera masks and adding stories of loved ones to the communal memory wall. There will also be a documentary screening on how families in Mexico prepare for this holiday and a special guest appearance by La Catrina, the satirical and elegant female skeleton. Independent radio journalist and DJ, Betto Arcos will be emceeing and sharing his own Day of the Dead stories and memories. Fresh tamales, tacos, pan de muerto and aquas frescas will be available for purchase.
