Hammer Museum Set to Reopen

April 17 opening date set for Westwood museum

By Chad Winthrop

The grand reopening for the Hammer museum in Westwood is just around the corner.

The Hammer will reopen April 17, following health and safety guidelines issued by the State of California, Los Angeles County, and UCLA, according to the museum’s website.

Free, advance reservations are required. Capacity is limited. Reservations are made available on a first come, first served basis every other Tuesday. The next reservation release will be Tuesday, April 20 at 8:30 a.m.

“Please make a reservation for children ages 4 and up. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, all visitors are expected to follow the safety guidelines listed below,” the museum said.

Hammer members receive early access to reservations. Member tickets are released every other Monday for the following two weeks via email. Become a member today.

Free admission to the Hammer Museum is made possible through the generosity of Erika J Glazer and Brenda R. Potter.

On display up first will be Made in L.A. 2020: a version, featuring works by 30 Los Angeles–based artists are presented at both institutions—two versions that make up the whole. The exhibition features new installations, videos, films, sculptures, performances, and paintings, many commissioned specifically for the exhibition.

Funded through the generosity of Los Angeles philanthropists and art collectors Jarl and Pamela Mohn, three awards totaling $150,000 will be given to artists in the exhibition: the Mohn Award, the Career Achievement Award—both of which are selected by a professional jury—and the Public Recognition Award, which is determined through votes cast by visitors to the exhibition. Visitors will be able to vote at both exhibition locations.

During the run of Made in L.A. 2020, members and visitors to the Hammer will receive passes granting free admission to The Huntington to view Made in L.A. 2020 in full.

Made in L.A. 2020 is organized by independent curators Myriam Ben Salah and Lauren Mackler, with the Hammer’s Ikechukwu Onyewuenyi, assistant curator of performance.

To ensure safety for visitors and staff, the Hammer has implemented the following measures:

  • Please stay home if you are feeling sick. Check the CDC website for coronavirus symptoms.
  • Face masks are required of all visitors and staff.
  • Visitors and staff should maintain physical distance—please stay at least six feet from people not in your group.
  • All areas of the museum, including galleries, the Hammer Store, restrooms, and the courtyard, have reduced occupancy limits.
  • One-way routes into the building and the galleries are indicated via signage and floor decals. Please follow signage and staff directions.
  • Common areas and frequently touched objects are disinfected on an hourly basis during business hours using EPA-approved disinfectants.
  • Elevators have a capacity of four guests, have physical distancing signage, and are disinfected on an hourly basis.
  • All stairs have one-way entry in order to control visitor flow.
  • Hand sanitizer stations are available throughout the building and at all gallery entries and exits.
  • Coat and bag check is closed. Please leave large items at home or in your car.
  • The museum’s restaurant is closed.
