California Speaker of the Assembly Karen Bass is the keynote speaker at the National Women�s Political Caucus (NWPC) Diversity Reception Friday, August 7, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., during the NWPC convention in Newport Beach, CA. The reception honors nine remarkable women leaders as Women of Courage.
The 19th biennial convention, hosted by the California Caucus, is at the Radisson Newport Beach Resort Friday through Sunday, August 7 through 9.
NWPC 2009 Women of Courage are attorney and feminist Gloria Allred; California Speaker of the Assembly Karen Bass; U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu; former State Senator Sheila Kuehl; Green-For-All CEO Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins; activist Lillian Mobley; author and activist Zoe Nicholson; Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis; and Long Beach Councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga.
A panel discussion on Title IX Education Amendments of 1972 is the focus of the Saturday morning breakfast, August 8. The panel is welcomed by Assemblywoman Alyson Huber and moderated by Karen Humphrey, executive director of California Postsecondary Education Commission.
Title IX panelists are Diane Milutinovich, director of Fresno University Student Union, who filed and won a Title IX lawsuit against Fresno State; Margie Wright, National Collegiate Athletic Association division 1 softball coach, who recently won a Title IX discrimination suit against Fresno State; and State Senator Dean Florez who is crafting legislation to counteract Title IX discrimination.

The Saturday evening gala and silent auction, August 8, features California State Controller John Chiang, who receives the �Good Guy� award and be a keynote speaker. Controller Chiang has long championed financial literacy and is using his position to empower working families.
Selected silent auction items include two signed lithographs by March Fong Eu, CA Secretary of State, beautifully framed and signed colored pencil drawing by U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein; and a week�s stay at a three-bedroom home in Mazatlan, Mexico among others.
