LA’s Best Libraries TARGETted for Make Overs

Councilmember José Huizar joined Target leadership and team member volunteers to makeover Sunrise Elementary’s library, a LA’s BEST site, and accept a $10,000 check from Target for computers at six LA’s BEST sites at the third annual Target Reads with LA’s BEST. Target granted LA’ s BEST six library makeovers, as well as literacy kits for nearly 4,000 children at 25 additional sites, promoting the joy of reading, the importance of education and that “homework is fun.†The Sunrise Elementary event is part of the company’s broader Target Volunteers School Library Makeover program.

“This partnership with LA’s BEST provides a wonderful opportunity for our team members in Los Angeles to give to their community by providing volunteer time directly to a school library in their hometown,†said Carmen Moch, regional vice president, Target. “Because education is a top priority for our guests, programs like LA’s BEST and the Target Volunteers School Library Makeovers allow our team members to provide students the tools they need to learn, thrive and succeed.â€

“Having grown up in Boyle Heights, I know that school libraries and books are a salvation and refuge to countless children,†said Councilmember José Huizar. “They certainly were for me. So I want to thank Target, LA’s BEST and Mayor Villaraigosa for their efforts to ensure our children have the educational tools they need to enjoy a better and brighter future.â€

The library makeovers, using materials ordered through Target Commercial Interiors will provide six elementary school libraries with kid-friendly reading areas including reading rugs, pillows, new shelving, seating, tables and more. In addition to the library makeover, Target is providing 25 different LA’s BEST sites with literacy materials including a Scholastic Learning Center, Learning Palatte Reading Resource Kits, and a Scholastic reading book for more than 3,000 students. Target’s support of LA’s BEST includes the library makeovers, literacy kits, computers and general operating funds.

“LA’s BEST is grateful to Target for its ongoing support of LA’s BEST and the students we serve,†said Carla Sanger, LA’s BEST President & CEO, “With this generous grant, we will enhance literacy programs, improve libraries to make them more inviting to children, and reinforce the notion as part of after school, reading can be fun.â€
